WHAT IS CAROB?

As you look through our recipes, you’ll find that we use carob instead of chocolate or cocoa powder. Why do we do this and what is carob, exactly? Here are some of the reasons why carob is good for you – and a better understanding of what it is.

WHAT CAROB CONSISTS OF

Carob is (by definition) a powder that’s brown in color and has been derived from the carob bean. This bean grows on trees that produce carob pods, and through a method of extraction, the carob powder that is used in treats and sold in health food stores in North America has been taken from this tree’s pod. Carob is also part of a Christian diet because it was one of the original foods eaten (see more information below).

So, now that you know what carob is, let’s talk about why we use carob instead of chocolate in our recipes, and why we love carob (and we know that you will too!).

BENEFITS OF CAROB

  • carob-slice-sarah-rNon dairy substitute: Carob doesn’t contain any dairy (or any traces of dairy), so it’s a perfect chocolate alternative for vegans or for people that are allergic to dairy products.
  • No caffeine: Unlike chocolate, carob doesn’t contain any caffeine. Caffeine can have a negative effect on some people causing sleeplessness, anxiety, and other medical issues.
  • Fewer calories: If you are watching your weight, carob is a great way to get that delicious chocolate taste without the calories (though you should be careful not to consume any kind of refined white sugar, so make sure to read package labels).
  • Helps to lower cholesterol: In some studies, it has been found that carob can help lower cholesterol levels.
  • One of the original Bible foods: Carob was known to the Ancient world, and chocolate was only introduced in the 16th century. This is why carob is part of the Christian diet.
  • It’s sweeter: Carob is naturally sweeter than chocolate, so you don’t have to add any refined sugar or sugar of any kind to it, though it may take a few tries to get used to the unique taste.

While carob certainly has its benefits, if you are used to the taste of chocolate, you may find that replacing chocolate with carob is difficult to do. We can help you with that!

THE BEST WAY TO THINK OF CAROB

Instead of thinking of carob as a chocolate substitute, it helps to eat carob with the mindset that this is a completely different food. As such, it has a unique taste, and you will learn to love the taste of carob once you forget about replacing chocolate – and just start adding carob to your diet. As you switching more sugary chocolate coated foods with carob infused foods, you will begin to appreciate the taste of the carob bean. Remember, carob was the “original chocolate” for good reason – it’s delicious!
