THE POSSIBLE DANGER OF EATING POULTRY

A recent Reuters special report sheds light on why eating chicken might be dangerous to your health. The report details the use of antibiotics at popular poultry farms in the United States. As Reuters revealed, poultry farmers use antibiotics liberally and regularly. The danger in this is that the antibiotics used to feed chickens on a constant basis (even when the animals are not sick) are the same antibiotics used to treat human illnesses, and that means that the same antibiotics may soon no longer work to treat human diseases.

The same report states that “today, 80 percent of all antibiotics used in America are given not to people, but to livestock.” What’s the problem with that fact? Feeding livestock antibiotics means that bacteria will eventually become resistant to those antibiotics. In turn, superbugs are created, and humans may not be able to ward off those bugs with antibiotics. Some of the companies that Reuters spoke to in the aforementioned report have decided to cut back on antibiotic usage, but some antibiotics are still being administered to chickens.

Further, according to the CDC, approximately 2 million people in the U.S. are struck by antibiotic-resistant illnesses every year. Out of those 2 million people, 23,000 people die from those illnesses. Could the chicken (and other livestock) that people are eating be to blame? While it might be too soon to make that judgement call, the Reuters report has certainly brought the problem of feeding livestock antibiotics to light.

VEGETARIAN RECIPES

There are a lot of reasons why you will only find vegetarian recipes on this website. One of those reasons is that the way animals are treated today is not in line with the values that the Bible put forth. The Bible clearly states that all of God’s living creatures should be treated with respect, since those creatures belong to God. If we look at Exodus 23:4, we will find the following passage:

“If you come across your enemy’s ox or donkey wandering off, be sure to take it back to him”

Even when you stumble across an enemy’s animal, you should treat it with respect. It’s hard to find a good reason why we should feed our livestock antibiotics or keep them in bad conditions (the article mentioned above also states that the average lifespan of a chicken is six weeks). This is one of the reasons why you will find that we only include vegetarian recipes in our cookbooks. The other reason is that eating an item containing antibiotics is not good for your health. As bacteria become more and more resistant to the antibiotics used in chicken, and other, feed, humans could be at a bit risk for many illnesses that we are not equipped to combat – that’s some real food for thought!
